School is out for summer, but the Jim Thorpe district is not letting the importance of education slide. The school board approved the budget for summer school kindergarten camp and the ESY program during a recent meeting.
The kindergarten camp is a four days a week, two-week program for incoming kindergarteners to help ease children and parents into the upcoming school year.Four teachers were approved: Jamie Kunkel, Sherry Schafer, Kelli Reese and Lisa Warren. The program runs from July 6 to 16.The board also approved employment for five District ESY instructors: Christine Trovato, Tanya Hoherchak, Amy Demko, Carol Judd and Justina Reph.This program is to help special education students maintain their academic status.There are 40 students in all and the program runs from July 6 to 30.A program for struggling readers will also be held this summer. The program will be run by volunteers every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon.This is an open program and not limited to just Jim Thorpe students. Any student in a surrounding district in need of extra help with reading is urged to stop by.
