Woman gets state term on drug counts
A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a state prison term on Monday in the county court after previously pleading guilty to drug-related charges.
Judith Karin Sabol, 36, of Summit Hill, was sentenced to serve a total of 12 to 36 months in a state correctional institution on two counts of acquiring or obtaining a controlled substance by misrepresentation and one count each of possession of a controlled substance and identity theft.Sabol asked Serfass to sentence her to a county prison term so she could stay close to her daughter. Serfass rejected the request, saying Sabol's long-term drug addiction and her prior criminal activities warranted a state prison term, where she would get the help she needed for her problem.Sabol was arrested by Jim Thorpe police for calling in a fraudulent prescription to the First National Pharmacy on May 24, 2014. That was declined, and she then called it in to the Mauch Chunk Pharmacy. She was also charged by Lansford police with doing the same thing at the Rite Aid Pharmacy on Jan. 6. She attempted it again on Jan. 8 at the CVS Pharmacy in Nesquehoning. One of the prescriptions was filled.Sabol, who suffers from mental health problems, blamed her use of drugs and crimes on not taking her medication for her mental health condition. It was noted that Sabol had entered inpatient drug rehabilitation programs three times, but apparently they didn't help her.At the time of the charges she was on parole and has a pending parole violation charge.Serfass said it was obvious that Sabol had a serious drug problem. He added, "It is regrettable what you did affects loved ones at home, but there are consequences for your actions."In addition to the jail term, Serfass ordered Sabol to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, zero tolerance for D&A use, supply a DNA sample, and pay court costs of about $1,000.On a driving under the influence charge, which she pleaded to, she was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in a state prison, consecutive to the first count, pay a fine of $1,000, and have her license suspended for one year. She was given credit for 129 days already spent in jail on the charges.
