Carbon County, Lansford to get funds from railroad

Carbon County and Lansford are receiving some money from Carbon and Schuylkill Railroad operations.

On Tuesday, during the county railroad commission's meeting, the board reviewed correspondence that said it will be receiving $16,743.83 from C&S Railroad, the company hired to manage the county's line. The money represents 2 percent of the 2014 gross receipts minus the $3,500 maintenance of way expenses incurred throughout the year.In addition, Lansford borough, through a longtime agreement with the railroad commission, will receive $4,185.96 25 percent of the money Carbon is receiving from the railroad.According to the letter sent to the county from C&S Railroad Corporation, which is operated by Reading, Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad, "2014 was a good year for both the Reading and Northern and the C&S."In 2014, C&S saw increases in some of its services in the county, while also seeing increases in its charges.As a result of all operations, which factors in freight services, as well as passenger service trackage rights, fuel expenses and other expenses, the total gross revenue for C&S increased 11 percent to $1,012,191 for the year.In other matters, the board ratified the action taken by the Carbon County Commissioners earlier this month regarding the proposal from K&L Gates LLP of Washington, D.C., for professional legal services to who manages the area around the line.K&L shall be paid no more than $5,000, depending on the complexity of the underlying laws and regulations and that cost will be covered by the railroad commission.
