Wolf expected to sign 911 center funding bill

HARRISBURG (AP) Pennsylvania lawmakers on Thursday sent a bill to raise millions to fund 911 emergency call centers to Gov. Tom Wolf, who is expected to sign it.

The Senate gave final approval to a proposal that would increase the fees paid by phone customers, typically $1 a month, to $1.65 a month.Wolf press secretaryJeff Sheridan said thegovernor supports thelegislation. The centers require about $292 million a yearto operate, but the phone bill fee has not been enough to pay the full cost and counties have had to subsidize them.Doug Hill with theCounty Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania said the legislation will increase efficiency, cut overhead, aid in planningand encourage regional responses."And, importantly, it's going to facilitate us adapting and putting in place next generation technologies like texts to 911 and, within a few short years, video and likely other enhancements," Hill said after the vote. The legislation gives 911 centers in Allentown and Bethlehem four years to pursue consolidation with their county systems.A proposal to add an optional $52-a-year tax was stripped out by the House.
