Fundraisers for Lehighton boy hit by car in Delaware
A car wash and bake sale fundraiser will be held for a 9-year-old Lehighton child in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in Fenwick Island, Delaware, last weekend.
The event to raise funds for Zander W. Hartman will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Advance Auto Parts in Lehighton. Baked goods and hot dogs will be available for sale.A website,

As of this morning, $7,575 of the $10,000 goal had been raised by 140 people in two days.According to an update posted on the site this morning, "Good news coming from DC. Zander is moving forward everyday. Thanks again for all of your donations. We almost reached our goal. Keep it coming!"Delaware State Police are investigating the serious crash involving Zander that occurred just north of the Delaware-Maryland state line just before 9 p.m. June 20.According to police reports, William D. Murphy, 52, of Havre De Grace, Maryland, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban northbound on Coastal Highway in Fenwick Island. He was approaching the intersection of Lighthouse Road with a green light.Zander, along with friends and family members, were attempting to cross Coastal Highway just north of the traffic light. After successfully crossing both southbound lanes of traffic, the crossing signal changed, forcing them to stop in the median near the raised curb.For unknown reasons, Zander darted out into the roadway directly into the path of the Suburban. He was struck with the front bumper of the SUV. After the impact, the Suburban immediately stopped in the bus lane.Zander was initially flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, and later transported by ambulance to DC Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he remains in critical condition.Murphy and his wife, who was a passenger in the SUV, were uninjured.
