Tree hits lines, causes power outage

Over 2,000 residents and businesses in the Lansford and Coaldale areas were without power for several hours Monday afternoon after a tree fell on a power line.

According to Paul Canevari, PPL regional affairs director, the incident happened at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the area of Klock's Hill. When the tree fell, Canevari said that a power line also came down. A total of 2,744 PPL customers in both towns were affected.Shortly after the outage, fire police were on-scene directing traffic at the signals along Patterson Street as PPL crews worked to restore power.Judi Deitrich, Boyer's store manager, said the grocery store, located on the west end of Lansford, was forced to shut down while the power was out.The store reopened to customers just before 9 p.m. after power was restored to that area.Leonel Cabrera, owner of Cabrera's Pizzeria and Restaurant, located at 161 W. Ridge St., said his business was without power until late but it didn't really affect the business since the restaurant is closed on Mondays.First Congregational Church, Coaldale, even held its Vacation Bible School in the dark without any electricity, Jodi Mika reported.Canevari said that by 8:30 p.m., all but 100 customers' power had been restored, with the remaining 100 homes restored around 11 p.m.
