Lehighton's Sesquicentennial is next year but the Lehighton 150th Anniversary Celebration Committee is already planning an event for Saturday.

From 6:30-8:30 p.m. the committee will host "The History of Lehighton, an evening with Mr. Mike Ebbert and Mr. Gordon Ripkey," at the Pfc. Clyde R. Houser Jr. Building/Borough Annex.The committee wants to raise $55,000 for an eight-day celebration to commemorate the 150 years of the borough.The festivities are scheduled for June 25-July 2, 2016.This week we'll be publishing tidbits of Lehighton history in conjunction with the celebration committee.People who attend Saturday's event will be given the opportunity to answer a questionnaire that reflects the historical information provided in the Times News to win prizes.TODAY'S FACTS:• The Mansion House Hotel was located on North First Street in 1873.• The first trolley run from Mauch Chunk to Lehighton occurred in 1903.• Gypsy Hill received its name in the late 1800s due to the Gypsies that would come to the fair. They chose this location to park their wagons so they could water and feed their animals in the Mahoning Creek and surrounding fields.Look for more tidbits of history to be published every day through Friday.
