Kidder hears complaints about mud, clay
A number of residents complained to Kidder Township supervisors about mud and clay that has been flowing down South Lake Drive this week.
"Just look at me," said a mud-splattered Louis Pantages. "I've just come from trying to keep it out of Nick's."The problem stems from a well being drilled just above Nick's Lakehouse Restaurant on the opposite side of South Lake Drive."The downpour on Sunday brought down all of the mud and today the clay is running down the hill and into our driveway and they placed two bales of hay at the spillway," Pantages added. "It's just not working."The township supervisors agreed that there was a problem."It only came to our attention this afternoon," said Lisa Klem, township manager. "We have contacted the contractor. We are waiting to hear back from them to see what can be done."Another topic of concern remains the storm sewers on North Lake Drive. While the local Homeowners Association is prepared to proceed on redoing the culverts on their property, the township remains responsible for the bulk of the sewers along North Lake Drive.Chairman Thomas Bradley made it clear that the township would proceed according to the requirements set forth for the township by state law."The township cannot split them up just to speed up the process because it could be construed as circumventing state law," Bradley said. "We will talk to our engineers and decide what we will do based on their recommendation."Klem did say that she was hoping that the cost would not be so high that it would require a bid package, but reserved committing to a date when the township would be able to proceed.Township businessBills were approved in the amount of $338,178.57, which was much higher than usual due to the distribution of the tax share to the three fire companies and the rescue squad. Also included in that number was $60,000 in expenses for the renovations to the municipal building.Klem said the Albrightsville Fire Company had been awarded a $50,000 Local Share grant for new self-contained breathing apparatus. She also said the township was applying for grants for erecting a traffic signal at the intersection of Lake Drive and 903 and to build a parking lot adjacent to the township building. The 911 addressing letters will be going out soon and will include new address information and instructions for house numbers.False fire alarmsKlem said the township ordinance allows for the fire companies to charge for false alarms and that the fines were paid to the township. Klem made a request of the supervisors to pass a motion allowing the fire companies to deposit the fines into their equipment funds. The motion passed."We might want to look at the amount of the fines," said Vice Chairman Larry Polansky. "I don't think we have changed those since the 1960s."The fines will be discussed at the next fire commission meeting."I want to point out that we are not talking about someone burning something on the stove and setting off their alarm," Lake Harmony Fire Chief Ralph Lennon said. "Sometimes it's just human error, but those are legitimate calls."
