Schuylkill OKs court security cameras
An extra level of security could soon be coming to six magisterial district court offices in Schuylkill County.
County commissioners approved putting a court security camera project out for bid during Wednesday's board workshop.Lois Wallauer, county court administrator, said the project will include the installation of a closed-circuit television system with interior and exterior cameras, and a network video recording system."A similar system was already installed at District Justice James K. Reiley's court when the office was moved to East Arch Street in Pottsville in 2014," Wallauer said. The county was fully reimbursed for that system from the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts through an appropriation of state funds.A similar reimbursement would take place for the six remaining systems at Judge Christina Hale's court in Frackville, Judge David A. Plachko's court in Port Carbon, Judge James R. Ferrier's court in Orwigsburg, Judge David J. Rossi's court in Tremont, Judge Anthony J. Kilker's court in Shenandoah and Judge Stephen J. Bayer's court in Tamaqua."We have to put it out to bid, but we are expecting the six remaining systems to cost in excess of $20,000," Wallauer said. "Our current camera systems are outdated, and with the AOPC making this money available to us, we are certainly going to take advantage of that."Portable prisoner cellThe Schuylkill County Sheriff's Office will be getting a portable prisoner cell following approval by the commissioners at Wednesday's workshop. The cell will cost $4,045, according to Chief Deputy Brian Tobin."We can use it to take prisoners from hearing room to hearing room or to central booking," Tobin said.Act 137 fundingCommissioners also approved $161,869 in Affordable Housing Trust Fund allocations for 2015.Jeff Feeser, of Schuylkill Community Action, said the county received 10 requests for proposals totaling $299,700, exceeding the amount of available.Projects recommended for approval include:• $8,000 to the Court of Common Pleas for the Residential Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Program,• $10,000 to Schuylkill Women in Crisis for utilities, maintenance, facility upkeep and security within transitional housing for victims of domestic violence,• $11,000 to Schuylkill Community Action for delivery costs within the bridge transitional housing program,• $15,000 to Schuylkill County Community Action for counseling services to lower income people with a housing need,• $25,000 to Northern Schuylkill County Council of Governments for the acquisition and rehabilitation of two properties for resale,• $39,000 to Schuylkill County Housing Authority for upgrades to the kitchen at the Schuylkill Haven High Rise, and• $53,000 to Schuylkill Community Action for a countywide housing repair program to assist low income senior citizens repair or replace major failed systems within a residence.
