Residents question cell tower

Coaldale residents Jim Filer and Ed Flyzik had many questions for Coaldale Borough Council Tuesday night, all about the possible cellphone tower proposed to be built on Lehigh and Third streets.

The land is currently condemned. In dispute is whether the land belongs to the county or the borough and if the cell tower will meet safety regulations, according to the two men.Council told them their concerns are an issue for the zoning board. The only problem with that is the board needs members, but an advertised June 15 deadline for applicants had passed without any interest. Then, Mayor Joel Johnson produced two zoning board applications that should have been shared with council prior to the meeting but weren't."I'd like to make a motion that next time the mayor gets information, to hand it in on time." Councilman Francis Hutta said. The motion was approved.Filer and Flyzik were then appointed to the zoning board after being nominated by councilwoman Brenda Hosler.Filer joins resident John Unitus on the board while Flyzik and resident Jamie Snyder were named as alternates.A special zoning board meeting to further discuss the cellphone tower will be held June 23."The more people here to voice concerns, that's what they are going to go on," Councilman Harry Hontz Jr. said, encouraging residents to attend the meeting. The second motion passed was the sewer maintenance fee extension for this year. The fee deadline will be extended until the end of August.
