One punch doesn't sound like much, but that's what landed one man in a Lehigh Valley area hospital in critical condition, on May 30.
Zachary Evans and some friends had just left the Hang Loose Bar in Tamaqua and were walking toward the Citizen's Fire Company on Rowe Street. It was 2:30 a.m. and they were hoping to extend their evening a little bit longer. As they approached the fire company a man came out the door. Evans went up to him, placed his arm around the other man's shoulder and asked, "Hey, how do we get in this place?" The older man, who was wearing a red bandanna, warned Evans not to touch him. As Evans backed away with his hands in the air, the other man punched him with a closed fist. The victim fell to the ground, striking his head against a parked car as he went down. The other man left in a white SUV.Evans was unconscious and his friends dialed 9-1-1. When the ambulance and police arrived, Evans was breathing but still unconscious. Due to the weather, a medical helicopter was unavailable and the victim was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, by ambulance. With the help of video surveillance and the Citizen's bartender, police were able to identify the assailant as Thomas Hosler, 52, of 504 Washington St., Tamaqua. Officers went to his home, but he and his vehicle were nowhere to be found that night. He was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment.Evans remains hospitalized as a result of the assault.
