The Lehighton United Veterans Organization of Lehighton held "rural Sunday" Memorial Day services throughout the Lehighton area.
Ten events were held Sunday morning at local cemeteries."For those who gave all, we owe a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid," wrote K.M. "Spike" Long, commander of the Lehighton UVO.At the event held at the Dinkey Memorial Church Cemetery, Keith "Jake" Boyer, a United States Air Force and Vietnam War veteran, spoke about "serving God, our families, and this great country, these three things are what all veterans past and present serve."Katelyn Markell, a 12-year-old member of the Dinkey Memorial Church Sunday school, read "In Flanders Field," a World War I poem by John McCrae.She assisted Past VFW Commander Harry J. Wynn III with laying a wreath at the VFW War Memorial in the cemetery.Other events were held at Ben Salem Church Cemetery, as well as St. John's Church Cemetery, Zimmerman's Cemetery, Packerton Cemetery, Long Run Cemetery, Parryville Cemetery, Big Creek Cemetery, Franklin Heights Cemetery and St. Matthew's Cemetery in Weissport.
