Caregiver admits helping self to checks

A Carbon County woman pleaded guilty in the county court on Thursday to taking money from an elderly person she was supposed to be helping.

Charmagne A. Velez, 45, of Nesquehoning, pleaded guilty to one count of tampering with records before Judge Joseph J. Matika. Forgery and related charges were dropped in a plea bargain.Lansford police charged she was a caregiver for Joseph Daniels and wrote checks from his account to herself without permission.Velez disputed that she was his caregiver, stating she was only helping him with his finances.The police report indicated she wrote 14 checks in her name for cash. She was charged in October 2013.Matika placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to make restitution to Daniels for $1,200, render 50 hours of community service, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation, and have no contact with the victim.She must pay at least $50 per month on the restitution until it is paid in full by the end of her probation period.
