Carbon County voters will have two choices for county sheriff come the November election.
Rick Bekesy of Penn Forest Township defeated Frank J. Manole Sr. on the Republican ticket during Tuesday's primary election. Bekesy received 1,640 votes, while Manole received 1,387.Bekesy will now face off against Democrat Anthony C. Harvilla of Tresckow in November.Harvilla, who was unopposed on the ticket, garnered 3,915 votes.Bekesy and Harvilla are both vying for their first term as sheriff.Current county Sheriff Dwight Nothstein did not seek re-election and is retiring at the end of his term at the end of the year.Bekesy has 24 years of experience in the law enforcement field and worked in the Carbon County Sheriff's Office from 1992 to 1997, before taking a supervisory position in the maintenance department of the Carbon County Correctional Facility.He currently works with the Tamaqua Borough Police Department and was also with the Rush Township Police Department for several years.Harvilla also has a long history in law enforcement, beginning his career in 1977 as the first work release coordinator at the Carbon County Correctional Facility.In 1980, he was appointed to the Carbon County Adult Probation office and worked in the capacity of chief adult probation officer.In 1989, he took a position as a federal probation officer with the United States Courts and, in 2010, was promoted to chief U.S. probation officer in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. He currently is a special deputy sheriff.
