Scare in Summit Hill
The normal Friday activities in the small town of Summit Hill were interrupted for many on the west end of Ludlow Street as FBI, ATF, Pennsylvania State Police bomb units and local emergency personnel converged on the 400 block to conduct a search of "hazardous materials" found in a residence.
The usually quiet street, where most everyone knows each other, was alive with activity throughout the day as officials set up a perimeter just after 6 a.m. Friday and entered 416 W. Ludlow St., owned by Paul Yuricheck and his adult son, Jude, who is currently a candidate for borough constable.Mark Nalesnik, Carbon County Emergency Management Agency director, said that authorities were notified at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday by a family member, later identified by authorities as Paul, who found a number of questionable items in the basement of the home.Pennsylvania State Police's bomb unit was called in after the initial investigation by local police. FBI teams were then notified.Over the next several hours, men in hazmat suits could be seen bringing things out of the residence, with the Lehigh County Special Operations team analyzing them.Nalesnik said that items that crews found could be "possible bomb making materials" but noted that no bomb was found on the site. No official details of items found in the basement were released, but officials said that some of the items were legal, while others were not.Nalesnik added that the items in question were not explosive in their current forms.Because of the discoveries and investigation, it was determined that an evacuation of the surrounding homes was not necessary, but officials urged residents to remain alert.Nalesnik said that as a precaution, no one could remain in the residence overnight. As evening fell on the now once-again quiet block, Joe Valitsky, who lives across the street from the Yurichecks, said he was "surprised" by the whole scenario."I can't believe this happened," he said. "It's a quiet area. I can't imagine anything like this happening."Summit Hill Police Chief Joseph Fittos said that no charges have been filed and no one has been arrested in the incident but as the investigation continues, things may change. He added that police are waiting until the investigation is completed by the FBI, who are in charge of the scene, before determining the necessary course of action.By 2:30 p.m., FBI agents, Diligence Fire Company personnel, Summit Hill police and fire police and the Lehigh County Special Operations team began shutting down operations for the day. Crews, as well as additional FBI units from Washington, DC will be back today, beginning at 9 a.m. to go through the home to analyze more items. The 300 and 400 blocks of West Ludlow Street will be closed to traffic at that time and officals ask residents to please respect the perimeters set up and give crews space to work.
