Panther Valley candidates

Democratic and Republican nominations for five positions on the Panther Valley School District Board of Education and a Democratic ballot for four nominations on the Lansford Borough Council highlight Tuesday's primary election ballot in the Panther Valley communities of Lansford, Nesquehoning and Summit Hill.

Panther Valley School DistrictSeven people are seeking five nominations on both tickets for the five four-year terms up for grabs in the school district.On the Democratic side are Anthony DeMarco, Michelle Markovich, Gary Porembo, Renee DeMelfi, Wayne V. Gryzik, Joseph J. Faenza Jr. and Jeffrey J. Markovich.All of the candidates, except Faenza, are cross-filed and are seeking Republication nominations too.The district elects directors on an at-large basis in the three voting districts of Lansford, two districts in Nesquehoning, four districts in Summit Hill and three districts in Coaldale in neighboring Schuylkill County.Lansford BoroughLansford voters are scheduled to elect five council members, including four for four-year terms and one who will serve a two-year term.For the four-year terms, there are an abundance of candidates, including a competitive race on the Democratic ballot where the candidates are Matthew S. Walsh, Joseph Butrie, Mary Soberick, Bernice L. Moser and Jared M. Soto. The top four finishers on that race will square off against three Republicans who are seeking council seats. Unopposed on the GOP side are Bruce Markovich, Catherine O'Brien and John N. Turcmanovich.Lansford voters will also elect a constable for a six-year term. The only candidate is Democrat George T. Bottomley Jr.Nesquehoning BoroughFor the first time in a long time, there is a shortage of candidates in Nesquehoning. The voters are slated to elect four people to four-year terms on the council, but there are only two candidates.Democrats Donato P. DeMarco and David DeMelfi are unopposed on that ballot while there are no GOP candidates.Democrat Regina Kennedy is running again for a six-year term as the borough's constable and is unopposed both within her party and on the GOP side.Summit Hill BoroughThere are no races on the municipal level in Summit Hill this time around. Voters are scheduled to elect four people to four-year terms on the borough council.There are four Democratic candidates: Michael Kokinda II, Gregory Kosciolek, Karen L. Ruzicka and David A. Wargo.Only one Republican is seeking a council seat: David B. Hiles. He and the four Democrats will run for the four openings in November.Democrat Max Matyascik is the lone candidate on both ballots for the six-year term as constable that is also slated to be filled this year.
