Lehighton area races

Contests for nominations on both tickets for positions on the Lehighton Area School Board and on the East Penn Township Board of Supervisors highlight the primary election balloting in the Lehighton area.

The election will take place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.Lehighton Area School DistrictThe school board race has 10 people seeking five nominations for four-year terms on the Democratic and Republican ballots. All 10 candidates appear on both ballots.They are Byron J. Arner, Wayne W. Wentz, Justin Wehr, Myron Zeke Blahy, Larry E. Stern, Marianne Dwyer, Richard R. Beltz, Frank Tamburri, Andrew Yenser and George Stawnyczyj.The district encompasses Lehighton, Parryville and Weissport boroughs and Mahoning, East Penn and Franklin townships.East Penn TownshipIn East Penn, there are three people on both the Democratic and Republican ballots. They are seeking two nominations within each party for six-year terms that are up for grabs.The Democrats are Jacob Nothstein, Guy Barry and Randy Pfeiffer. The Republicans are Dean R. Kercsmar, Alice Berger and William G. Schwab.Township voters are also slated to elect an auditor and a constable, both for six-year terms, although there are no candidates for either position.Lehighton BoroughThere is a contested race on the GOP ballot for positions on the Lehighton Borough Council.Five candidates are seeking four nominations that are up for grabs for the four-year terms.That race is between Jared McEvoy, Darryl W. Arner, Lisa Perry, John Wayne Bird and John J. Kreitz.Democrat Grant R. Hunsicker is the only candidate within his party to seek a nomination.The borough voters are also expected to elect a person to serve a six-year term, as constable. No one is seeking the position.Franklin TownshipThere are no contested races in Franklin Township this time around.Township voters are scheduled to elect someone to serve a six-year term on the board of supervisors. That will be decided in November since Democrat Bill Hill and Republican Barbara Beltz are unopposed within their parties for the primary.Three other positions are supposed to be filled by the electorate, but there are no candidates for the posts. They include a four-year term and six-year term as auditor and a six-year term as constable.Mahoning TownshipMahoning Township's situation in similar to that in Franklin in that there is no primary race for supervisor, but there will be one in the general election.There are two six-year terms to be filled. Two Democrats, Sue Ann Lewine and Frank Ruch, are the only candidates on that side of the ballot, while the lone Republican is Brian Reeser.Delroy Ruch Jr., a Republican, is running for a six-year term as auditor. He in unopposed within his party and there is no Democratic candidate.No one is running for two other positions slated to be filled by the voters, those being a two-year term as auditor and a six-year term as constable.Parryville BoroughThe municipal ballot in Parryville Borough this time around will be blank.The voters are expected to elect two persons to serve four-year terms on the council and one person to be the constable for six years, although no one has filed a petition to have their name appear on the borough's ballot.Weissport BoroughThere are no primary contests in Weissport Borough as well.Two council positions, both for four years, are expected to be filled by the voters, but there is only one candidate. He is Arland F. Moyer Sr., a Democrat.James E. Osborne, also a Democrat, is the only one running for the six-year term as constable that is available.
