There are no primary election races for nomination to the three open Schuylkill County commissioners' seats.
Schuylkill County voters on May 19 will choose which two of their party's candidates to nominate for county commissioner. Currently, the board is composed of two Republicans and one Democrat.Candidates from each party are running as teams: Republican incumbents Frank J. Staudenmeier and George F. Halcovage Jr., and Democratic incumbent Gary J. Hess and his running mate, Joseph Devine, are seeking nominations to four-year terms.The Times News posed these questions to the candidates:1. How can Schuylkill County stem the outmigration of its youth?2. Many young people choose not to stay in the county because of its reputation for being unwelcome to diversity racial, sexual orientation, religious or gender. What are you doing, or would you do, to make the county more welcoming and appreciative of differences?3. The county prison is aging and overcrowded, and court schedules are busier than ever. Would you be in favor of establishing a drug court in the county?4. How would you help people regain their trust in county government in the wake of last year's accusations of embezzlement against the clerk of courts?5. Why should voters elect you?
