Three Northern Lehigh employees set to retire

Northern Lehigh School District has accepted the retirement of three employees.

On a unanimous vote, the school board on Monday accepted the retirement resignations of Denise Turoscy, high school English teacher; Mary Smith, middle school guidance counselor; and Barry Edwards, districtwide maintenance worker.Turoscy's retirement is effective the end of the work day on June 15, after 34 years of service.Smith's retirement is effective Aug. 21, after 12 years of service.Edwards' retirement is effective Aug. 19, after 11 years of service.Superintendent Michael Michaels offered complimentary remarks on each.Michaels said the district was losing "three very valuable employees."He said they will all be missed, and were all great people.Also as part of his superintendent's report, Michaels announced that past week was National Teacher Appreciation Week.Other businessThe board:• Appointed Sidney Snyder as school psychologist at a salary of $54,350 for 190 days and additional days as per diem, which will be budgeted for summer work, effective July 1.• Agreed to conduct an extended school year program for special education students in the district. As part of the extended program, from July 20-31, teachers Elizabeth Vasquez and Everly Kesack will be paid $29 per hour, four hours per day, while instructional aide Stephanie Stillwell will be paid $13.55 per hour for three hours per day. Teacher Susan Beil will be paid $29 an hour for four hours per day, while personal care assistant Tara Hengst will received $13.67 an hour for three hours per day, from Aug. 3-13. Also, Tracy Hoffman will be paid $29 per hour for three hours per day from July 20-27 and Aug. 3-13, while Dawn Tulio will get $20.31 an hour from July 28-31.• Agreed to adopt the memorandum of understanding between the district and Lehigh County Department of Human Services in collaboration with the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21, taking a public health approach to the promotion and implementation of Youth Mental Health First Aid through the training of staff members to be certified instructors. These instructors will provide the training to school district employees, parents and members of the community. This memorandum of understanding will be in effect for three school years, effective July 1 through June 30, 2018.• Approved Sidney Snyder to receive a stipend in the amount of $284 per day to attend the five day Mental Health First Aid Instruction training June 8-12.• Approved administration to enter into a partnership agreement with Lehigh Carbon Community College to provide the district's students with greater options to earn concurrent high school/college credit. The term of the Dual Enrollment Partnership Program will be Aug. 19-June 30, 2016.• Granted permission to Susan Bahnick to attend the PA School Nutrition Programs Conference from Aug. 2-5 at the Gettysburg Eisenhower Hotel in Gettysburg, with the cost of lodging, $363; meals, $120; and travel, $151, for a total cost of $634.• Approved a school board policy related to student restraint.• Announced that high school graduation will be held at 7 p.m. June 12.
