Man is nabbed in crime spree

Lansford police have nabbed a man they believe went on a crime spree that included breaking into a borough woman's home while she was sleeping in September.

Joseph Zarsky, 31, faces numerous felony and misdemeanor charges including burglary, criminal trespass, criminal attempt, criminal mischief, theft and receiving stolen property for residences and businesses that he entered or attempted to enter stemming from the crimes, which happened between August and October 2014.Police had issued seven felony warrants for Zarsky, the most recent on March 6. Zarsky is now in Carbon County Correctional Facility after being seen in Philadelphia in the first week of March, then found in Pittsburgh on March 13.He admitted to having entered or trying to enter homes and businesses in search of money.The March 6 warrant was issued after a burglary that took place at in the 300 block of West Abbott Street between Sept. 5 and Sept. 6, 2014.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Joshua Tom, the homeowner was asleep when Zarsky broke into her house. She discovered the burglary at 6:50 a.m. Sept. 6.Police later identified the burglar as Zarsky. He first tried to get into the woman's home through a back porch door by cutting a screen near the doorknob. He eventually pried open two windows, one on the back porch and another that leads directly into the home. the windows were damaged and had to be replaced.Once inside, Zarsky went into the basement, which leads to the kitchen. He went through kitchen cabinets and found several envelopes and purses, which contained a total of about $50.Police retrieved fingerprints from the windows and an interior window ledge that matched Zarsky's.Zarsky has never been permitted inside that home, police said.Lansford police were assisted in their investigation of the burglaries by police departments in Carbon and Schuylkill counties, as well as the state police crime lab.
