Keep the spirit of tourism week alive
As National Tourism Week (May 2-10) wraps up, I challenge our Carbon County businesses and the community to keep the spirit alive and celebrate all year long! The U.S. Travel Association indicates that the annual tradition was established by a congressional resolution in 1983 and first celebrated the following year. The nationwide week of events serves to champion the power of our industry.
The 2015 theme was chosen to reflect the wide-ranging and robust ways that the U.S. travel industry contributes to the fabric of America. It was designed for destinations and organizations to customize the message to best fit their individual markets. They encouraged the travel and tourism community to be fun and creative reflecting the unique value and impact of the industry. For example:Travel is adventure.Travel is family bonding.Travel is serious business.Travel is more than just fun.Travel is creating American jobs.Travel is essential to our economy and our lives.See more at

As a resident I can enjoy outside activities like hiking, biking, kayaking and stroll through our quaint towns, enjoy a great meal and do it all over again!I challenge you to get outside, enjoy the attractions that Carbon County has to offer, and then invite your family, friends and colleagues to join you.If you own a business, how can you attract travelers?Assess your business:• Is your website up-to-date, easy to navigate and attractive to tourists?• Is your signage visible and well-designed? Clearly stating what is sold?• Do you promote amenities such as free Wi-Fi and restrooms?• Are your store windows clean and well-lit?• Is your sidewalk and street clean?• Is your facade appearance well-maintained and in good repair?• Are customers greeted warmly when they enter?• Can you and your employees answer questions about the town and region? Do you do so in a friendly manner?• Do your store hours match customer needs? Be open for events and large tour dates.Take pride in your town, your business and yourself. Keeping this in mind, as you greet your traveling customers, you may just see them again!A special thanks to all of our businesses in Carbon County that support the tourism industry creating jobs and economic growth, attracting visitors to the area, and most importantly fun and adventure for all! What is your theme for travel and tourism this year?
