Part-time Nesquehoning police officer Steven Homanko was charged Monday by state police with homicide by vehicle and related charges stemming from a May 12, 2014, crash that took the life of Carola Sauers, 69, of Hazleton, and severely injured her husband, 64-year-old Michael Sauers.
According to the Pennsylvania Police Pursuit Reporting System, deaths resulting from police pursuits are rare.Here are the numbers from 2013, the most recent data available:• Seven people were killed as a result of pursuit crashes. Of those fatalities, all seven were violators.• 514 pursuits resulted in a total of 671 crashes (more than one crash may occur during a pursuit), with 203 of the pursuits resulting in injury to the violator, police or uninvolved people.• 69.77 percent of pursuits resulted in the apprehension of one or more violators; 58.08 percent of the apprehensions were accomplished using a trailing pursuit, the least forceful technique.Source: State Police Bureau of Research and Development
