Weis is seeking second driveway

Weis Markets is looking to add a second driveway to Route 209 and eliminate problems with the current design.

On Tuesday, the Chestnuthill supervisors discussed the proposed improvements.Weis currently only has ingress and egress via Weir Lake Road. The proposed change will add a second driveway which will open directly onto Route 209.According to store representatives, the new driveway will eliminate the "bottleneck" that was created by the current design. The new plan calls for sidewalks along both frontages with an ADA ramp at the corner by the traffic light at Weir Lake Road and Route 209.At this time, PennDOT is requesting that the township file the applications for the necessary permits for the project. The supervisors agreed, pending agreement of the township engineer, to sign a resolution permitting Weis to act on their behalf for the purpose of submitting the permit applications.A second resolution was also adopted by the board. This resolution, which was presented by township solicitor Tim McManus, is to bring the township into "technical compliance" with state law."There are 572 stop signs in the township," McManus said. "The state requires the township to have an ordinance which reflects the relevant parts of the motor vehicle code which apply to the stop signs."In other matters, the township approved motions to accept a bid for paving and topcoat in the amount of $335,850, and the township will be accepting bids for a six bay, 100-foot by 60-foot pole barn. The barn will be erected directly behind the township building and will be used to store various pieces of equipment. At this time the equipment is left out without protection. The supervisors also approved payment of monthly bills in the amount of $121,717.06. The only significant payment was to the West End Fire Company for their yearly contribution of $50,000.The West End Park and Open Space Commission, represented by Bernie Kozen, pointed out a number of upcoming events including bingo on May 15 with guest caller Rep. Jack Rader, a crafts fair on May 23, a "Tribute to Veterans" concert on May 24 and a wine tasting on June 30.The second meeting in May is canceled since it fell on Election Day.
