The famed Lakewood Ballroom, which in its heyday hosted such big names as Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, was destroyed by fire.

The building was completely engulfed in flames by the time the firemen arrived at 11:45 p.m. at the Ryan Township landmark.The ballroom, which had not been used for the past 16-plus years, routinely drew 1,000 people and more to hear the country's most popular big bands. In addition to the Dorseys, entertainers Harry James and Vaugh Monroe had performed on the main stage of the ballroom in the past.
