Community comes together to beautify Lehighton

On a gorgeous Saturday morning, four community groups converged on the downtown park to help the community. The Lehighton Shade Tree Commission, Daisy Troop 33 of Lehighton, Boy Scout Troop 82 of Lehighton, and the Lehighton Downtown Initiative gathered to plant trees, plant flowers and clean up the area.

Mark Hoffman, president of the Shade Tree Commission, said every year they gather to plant some trees and flowers to help make a better community.Karen Shaffer, leader of Daisy Troop 33, and Scot Wingert, leader of Boy Scout Troop 82, shared the same sentiment.Combined, the two groups provided 10 children and young adults to help with the activities. The Daisy Troop concentrated on cleaning up the garden around the statue at the entrance to the park, while the Boy Scout Troop planted two trees, one on North First Street and one on Coal Street.Shaffer thanked the Lowe's Store for donating all of the plants.Hoffman said, "Without the support of the community groups, we would not be able to do this event yearly."Jim Henderson, president of the Lehighton Downtown Initiative, added, "We are kicking off the initiative with helping our community by doing a cleanup day in conjunction with the Shade Tree Commission.""What better way to start a vitalization of our community then with cleaning it up," he said. The Lehighton Downtown Initiative is sponsoring the 2015 Bike Night in Lehighton.Henderson said, "This group is more than the Lehighton Bike Night, we have many community events planned."Nicole Beckett, Lehighton borough manager and member of the Downtown Initiative thanked Phil Gintz of Phil's Fries for donating refreshments. With the four combined groups, there were some 25 people out in force cleaning, weeding, planting flowers and trees, as well as picking up litter and trash.
