Woman waives hearing in stabbing

A Palmerton woman accused of stabbing her companion in the arm with a knife will have charges bound over to Carbon County Court.

Frances Hallman, 62, of 27 Penn Ave. was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.Instead, Hallman waived her right to a hearing, and will appear June 16 for a pretrial status conference in the district attorney's office at the Carbon County Courthouse in Jim Thorpe.Hallman faces charges of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment.Her bail is at $75,000, but she is to post 10 percent.According to an affidavit filed by trooper Marvin Shair of the Pennsylvania State Police:At 10 a.m. April 19, Shair was dispatched to 27 Penn Ave. in Lower Towamensing Township for an assault involving a knife.Shair was met by a man who said he had been living with Hallman.The man said an argument erupted earlier in the day regarding him smoking in Hallman's residence, and Hallman got really upset and started chasing him around the residence.He said Hallman grabbed a knife from the kitchen and began stabbing him in the arms while he was pinned against a corner in the kitchen. He attempted to get the knife away from Hallman, but she kept stabbing him in the arm.The man said he never attacked Hallman.At 10:10 a.m., Shair interviewed Hallman, who said that she met the man at a church a year ago and allowed him to live with her.Hallman said she confronted the man regarding him smoking in the residence, and an argument erupted. She said the man grabbed her by the neck and started slamming her head against the living room coffee table.Hallman said the man kept chasing her around the residence, so she grabbed a kitchen knife. He attempted to kick her, so she stabbed him in the arms to get him away.Hallman said she believed she only stabbed him twice in the arms.She said the man has a history of physically abusing her, and that she was defending herself.Hallman said she was admitted to the hospital a week earlier due to him ripping out her catheter bag, as she has multiple medical issues including a brain tumor, diabetes, and needs medical monitoring.The man had three stab wounds on his arms, and was transported to Palmerton Hospital. Shair did not observe any injuries on Hallman.
