A Schuylkill County driver was killed in a one-vehicle crash in which his vehicle burst into flames.

State police at Schuylkill Haven identified the victim as Charles Smith, 69, of Mahantongo St., Pottsville. The incident occurred at 12:01 p.m. on Wednesday along Route 125, near Camp Road, in Tremont Township.Troopers said Smith was driving a 2000 Ford Econoline van northbound at a high rate of speed when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the van. The van crossed the center line and continued across both lanes of travel and onto the berm where it struck two trees.Upon impact the van deflected off the trees and shot across both lanes a second time.The van then struck an embankment along the northbound lane before coming to final rest across the center yellow lines facing southeast.Immediately upon coming to rest the van burst into flames and was destroyed.Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner Albert Barnes.The investigation into the crash is continuing.
