Monroe soldier killed in Texas hit-and-run

A Kunkletown soldier, currently stationed in Texas, was struck and killed while walking along a highway this past weekend.

According to the U.S. Army Fort Hood press center, Sgt. Derek Roy Pagan, 29, died from injuries he suffered when he was apparently hit by a vehicle on April 26 in Austin, Texas. Austin County Emergency Services pronounced him dead at 2:26 a.m.Austin police received a call of a body on Highway 183 southbound in East Austin shortly after 2 a.m.The Army Times reported that Pagan was walking along the southbound lane when he was struck by a vehicle that then left the scene. A couple coming home from a wedding noticed a man, who had found Pagan's body, on the side of the road attempting to wave down traffic, and pulled over to help. The couple, identified as Veronica Carmona and Joe Salazar, stopped and called 911 and then attempted to block Pagan's body until help arrived.Investigators believe Pagan may have been struck by more than one vehicle.Pagan, a 2005 graduate of Pleasant Valley High School, entered the military in April 2011 as a radio and communications security repairer.He was assigned to 589th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood since October2013.Pagan's awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Air Assault Badge.A Facebook site, Justice For Derek, has been set up to spread the word about the incident.Austin police say on their website that the case is still being investigated and are asking anyone with information to contact the department's vehicular homicide unit detectives.This is Austin's 30th fatal traffic death and 31st fatality this year.
