An outpouring of support was shown this weekend for the more than 200 firefighters from several counties who spent over 30 hours battling a massive wildfire on the Blue Mountain.
The flames were extinguished Sunday night.On Monday the East Penn Township Fire Department's Social Hall was still filled with bottled water, Gatorade and Powerade drinks, sandwiches, pizzas and snacks.Those items were set to be distributed to the Salvation Army, the homeless shelter in Lehighton, as well as the various fire departments that responded in an effort to pay it forward.Fire departments fighting the blaze included: Lehighton, Mahoning Township, Franklin Township, Palmerton, Aquashicola, Bowmanstown, Parryville, Trachsville, Kunkletown, Jim Thorpe, Penn Forest Township, Summit Hill, Lansford, Nesquehoning, Polk Township, West Penn Township, New Ringgold, Walker Township, South Ward, Klecknersville, Walnutport and Lehigh Township.Cory Smith, East Penn Township Fire Chief, said he was in awe of the support shown by so many individuals and businesses."I'd like to thank the community and surrounding communities, the volunteers, the firefighters and support personnel," Smith said. "We really appreciate the donations."Smith said social media played an immense role as far as the donations were concerned."People put it on Facebook," he said. "It kind of just exploded."
