7 deer heads, 85 pounds of venison, steroids, lead to Monroe poaching charge

A Tunkannock Township man has been charged by Pennsylvania Game Commission officials after an investigation into several poaching incidents in Monroe County.

Allan D. Kides, 50, was arraigned before District Judge Richard Claypool, Pocono Pines, on April 15, charged with a multitude of game law violations and drug related charges. The charges resulted after a search warrant was executed at Kides home.

The investigation, conducted by Monroe County WCO Ryan Gildea, began after the game commission received a tip on Nov. 3, 2014, concerning a man who had killed multiple antlered deer by baiting them into leaving State Game Lands 129 and entering his backyard.

Conservation officers were granted a search warrant, which they used later that same day at Kides residence.

In the home, they found the heads of two freshly killed buck - an 8-pointer and a 9-pointer.

Kides admitted to killing both deer, as well as taking a 6-point buck during the archery season for deer. He then admitted taking two antlered deer during the 2013-2014 hunting season.

The legal limit for hunters is one buck per season.

The investigation determined that all five of the deer had been illegally baited.

During the search, officers also found the heads and/or racks of seven antlered deer, a gray fox pelt, a crossbow, a pair of night vision goggles, more than 85 pounds of processed venison and a bag of glass vials containing illegal steroids.

In addition to the game law violations, Kides was also charged with eight counts of possession of a controlled substance.

In New Jersey, he has been charged with falsely reporting the harvesting of two deer, which were actually killed in Pennsylvania, and for illegally securing a New Jersey resident hunting license. Those charges were filed by the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 21 before Judge Claypool.
