Newman seeking re-election as Towamensing Twp. supervisor

Republican Tom Newman has announced that he is running for re-election for supervisor in Towamensing Township.

Newman and his wife, Grace, have three children. They built a home in the 1980s in Towamensing Township and retired there in 2006.Since that time, Newman has gotten involved in county and township volunteer positions. Currently, he is the Carbon County EMA Planner/Trainer/ Radiological Officer, chairman of the Citizens Corps Council and the Carbon County Community Emergency Response Team director.He is presently a supervisor in Towamensing Township, the Emergency Management Coordinator for the township, a founding member of the Towamensing Township Historical Commission, and a member of the Kibler Schoolhouse Committee.He retired after 27 years as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marines and is also an NRA instructor, a member of both the American Legion Post 314 and the Palmerton Rod & Gun Club.He graduated from St. Johns University Jamaica, New York, School of Education with a B.S. in education and history in 1965. In 1966, he attended NYU graduate school, which he did not complete because he went on active duty to RVN.He served in many positions of leadership, including command and leadership assignments in the Marines that involved planning, organizational and operational skills, chairman for church organizations, teacher, and instructor, he used the organizational skills developed from a lifetime of hands-on work in his family business, the Marines, and the life experiences as husband, father and now grandfather of eight.At age 71, Newman feels he can continue to serve the township in the spirit of teamwork and cooperation that marks the relationship of the present supervisors. Supervisors have not raised taxes, have maintained the roads during the winter months, maintained a balanced and transparent budget, replaced two bridges and constructed a dry hydrant at the Pine Run boat ramp for use by the Towamensing and Franklin township fire companies, the state park and the Army Corps of Engineers. Supervisors plan to initiate a 15-year road repair program for the 71-plus miles of township roads.Newman can be contacted at
