Library hosts funeral train program

On the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's funeral train in Pennsylvania, the public can take a multimedia train ride through history at the Western Pocono Community Library, Route 115 and 131 Pilgrim Way in Brodheadsville.

The free presentation will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 22.Joseph Garrera, executive director of the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum in Allentown and a member of the board of directors of the Abraham Lincoln Association in Springfield, Illinois, will re-create the historic 1,664-mile funeral train journey.Through authentic photographs and actual news accounts from the era, participants will discover the journey that carried Lincoln's body from Washington, D.C., back to the western prairies and to its final resting place in Springfield, Illinois.Pennsylvania played an important role in Lincoln's national funeral. Two of the most memorable funerals along the route occurred in Harrisburg and Philadelphia, where Lincoln's open coffin was placed in state at the House of Representatives; and next to the Liberty Bell.The program is designed for all ages.Many present-day Americans remember the ceremonies and official funeral of President John F. Kennedy.Yet the nation's largest outpouring of national grief occurred when Lincoln died on April 15, 1865.Rare artifacts will be on display for one day only as part of this special event. A piece of silk bullion fringe from the 1865 Funeral Train will be displayed, along with other Lincoln relics.
