Seven sentenced in DUI cases

Seven defendants in drunken driving cases who previously pleaded guilty were sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass in Carbon County court on Monday.

Thomas C. Brown, 37, of Warminster, Bucks County, was sentenced to serve 48 hours to six months in jail, pay a fine of $500, have his license suspended for one year, render 25 hours of community service, and make restitution of $3,273.38 to Verizon for damage to a utility pole.He was arrested on July 21, 2014, along Stony Mountain Road in Penn Forest Township by state police at Fern Ridge. A test showed 0.16 BAC.He will begin the jail term at 8 p.m. April 24.Andrew Edmund Helmer, 55, of Albrightsville, was sentenced to serve 30 days to six months in jail, pay a fine of $750, have his license suspended for one year, and render 25 hours of community service.He was arrested on July 4, 2014, along Old Stage Road in Penn Forest Township by state police at Fern Ridge. A test showed 0.21 BAC.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. April 24 and serve the term on consecutive two-day weekends.Natasha Rae Long, 28, of Lancaster, was sentenced to serve 10 days to 24 months in jail, pay a fine of $500, have her license suspended for one year, and render 100 hours of community service.She was arrested on Aug. 30, 2014, along Maury Road in Franklin Township by state police at Lehighton. A test showed 0.08 BAC.She will begin the jail term at 10 a.m. April 19 and serve it on consecutive two-day stints (Sunday to Tuesday).Tony Amendolaro, 51, of Elmhurst Township, Lackawanna County, was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.He was arrested on Oct. 9, 2014, along the turnpike in Penn Forest Township by state police at the Pocono barracks. A test showed a 0.26 BAC.Timothy Philip Laybourn, 44, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 90 days to 60 months in prison, pay a fine of $1,500, have his license suspended for 18 months, and render 100 hours of community service.He was also sentenced on a driving under suspension-DUI related charge to serve 45 to 90 days in jail and pay a fine of $1,000. The jail terms run concurrently.He will begin the jail term on April 19 at 6 p.m. and serve it on consecutive two-day stints (Sunday to Tuesday), for a total of 45 weeks. Laybourn wanted to serve the time straight but could not because some of the medication he takes is not allowed in the prison.Gloria Stoudt, 55, of Lansford, was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, have her license suspended for one year, and render 25 hours of community service.On a driving under suspension-DUI related charge she was sentenced to serve 30 to 60 days in jail and a fine of $1,000. She must serve the full 60 days. The prison terms run concurrent.She was arrested by Jim Thorpe police on Oct. 17, 2014, along Route 209 at the Liberties. A test showed 0.20 BAC.She begins the jail term on May 1 at 9 a.m. and will serve it on consecutive two-day weekends.John Williams Rodgers, 30, of Mount Pocono, was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, have his license suspended for one year, and render 25 hours of community service. He was arrested by state police at Lehighton on Aug. 21, 2014.He will begin the jail term on April 17 at 9 a.m. and serve it on consecutive weekends of two and three days.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000, and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
