Danielsville man charged in fatal Lehigh crash

A 23-year-old Danielsville man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash on Dec. 21, 2014.

Michael Jon McCandless-Dietrich was charged with homicide by vehicle while DUI, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence of alcohol, and several traffic violations by Lehigh Township Police.He turned himself into authorities on Thursday for a preliminary hearing before District Judge Robert Hawke.The crash claimed the life of Zachary Wieder, 27, of Slatington, just four days before Christmas.Police say McCandless-Dietrich was operating a Ford F-150 at 2:30 a.m., driving the wrong way on a one-way section of Route 145 and on to Route 248, when he crashed into a GMC Yukon being driven by Wieder. Wieder was pronounced dead at the scene by the Northampton County Coroner's Office.Two passengers in the Yukon were seriously injured Chelsea Sergeant, 24, of Allentown, who suffered a broken jaw, broken arm and shattered pelvis; and a 4-year-old, in the back seat, who suffered a broken back and lacerated liver.A passenger in the Ford, Jocelyn Saul, 22, of Northampton, and Wieder also suffered significant injuries.Multiple alcoholic beverage bottles were found in the Ford, as well as scattered on the ground from the impact.Blood tests indicate McCandless-Dietrich's blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.Hawke set bail at $100,000, sending McCandless-Dietrich to the Northampton County Prison.
