Terry Whiteman, chairman of the Carbon County Labor Chapter, AFL-CIO, is pleased to announce the winners of the chapter's first high school essay contest.
First prize of $300 was awarded to Gavin Scott, 16, of Bowmanstown. Gavin, the son of Kara and Rob Scott, is a junior in the Palmerton High School. He is considering a career in law.Jonathan Simmons, a sophomore in the Jim Thorpe High School, won the $150 second prize in the contest. Jonathan is the son of Barry and Marie Simmons of Jim Thorpe.Both winners interviewed active and retired union members to gather information for their essays, which were on the topic of union membership.The contest was open to any Carbon County high school student.
