Man admits to count of trespassing

A Luzerne County man pleaded guilty to a trespass charge in Carbon County court on Thursday and was sentenced to a prison term.

He was one of 11 defendants in pending criminal cases to enter a plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika.Melvin Eduardo Fermaint-Ramos, 23, of Freeland, pleaded to one count of criminal trespass. A charge of burglary and related counts were dropped in a plea agreement. He was arrested by state police at Hazleton with entering a home in Banks Township, sometime between June 29 to July 2, 2011, while the homeowner was away. Various items from the residence were taken.A court-appointed interpreter was required since Ramos cannot speak any English.Matika sentenced him to serve three to 18 months in the county prison and ordered he make restitution of $4,625, which is a half-share of the total due since there is a co-defendant in the case, render 50 hours of community service, have no contact with the victim, and supply a DNA sample. He was given credit for 149 days already spent in jail on the charge and paroled.Matika also ruled the sentence run concurrent with a sentence he is serving in Luzerne County.
