Daughter charged in Jim Thorpe native's death
Lehigh County District Attorney James B. Martin announced today that a 14-year-old Upper Macungie Township girl has been charged as an adult with homicide in the death of her mother, whose body was found in South Whitehall Township on March 15.
Jamie Silvonek, of 1516 Randi Lane, was charged with homicide, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and criminal conspiracy in the death of her mother, Cheryl L. Silvonek, 54, a native of Jim Thorpe.
A new criminal complaint has been filed against the defendant's boyfriend, Caleb Gregory Barnes, who will be 21 on Sunday, charging him with homicide, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and criminal conspiracy.
Martin said a forensic examination of the cellphones of Jamie Silvonek and Barnes indicates that Jamie Silvonek talked about planning her mother's death and said in one text message to Barnes, "I want her gone."
Martin said the messages, which are detailed in an affidavit of probable cause, also indicate that the 14-year-old lied about her age to Barnes and told him she was 17 and that she wanted Barnes to tell her mother that he was 16 1/2.
Cheryl Silvonek's body was found buried under dirt and snow in the 5700 block of Haasadahl Road in South Whitehall Township on March 15.
Coroner Scott Grim ruled the death a homicide and the cause of death to be multiple stab wounds to the neck. An autopsy performed on March 16, 2015, also showed that the victim had contusions, abrasions and sharp force injuries to the head, neck, torso and extremities.
At a news conference, Martin credited the David M. Petzold Digital Forensics Laboratory of Lehigh County, on the campus of DeSales University, and the Lehigh County Regional Intelligence and Investigation Center in Allentown with finding evidence extracted from cell phones and analyzed by investigators that reveals what happened before the fatal stabbing occurred. Detectives also analyzed video footage. South Whitehall and Upper Macungie police and a detective with the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force interviewed the defendants, neighbors and an unnamed juvenile who told detectives that the defendants talked about killing both of Jamie Silvonek's parents.
