Lansford group to honor veterans

A Lansford group wants to honor the borough's men and women who have served in the military.

On May 16, Armed Forces Day, the Lansford American Legion Post 123 and the Lansford Events Committee will sponsor a dinner to honor local hometown heroes. The dinner, to be held at the Legion at 3 W. Ridge St., will begin with a cash bar cocktail hour at 5 p.m. and dinner will take place at 6 p.m. Guest speakers and certification presentations will follow dinner.Marie Ondrus, a member of the events committee and one of the organizers of the dinner, said this event is just another way of saying thank you for their brave service. The dinner is free for veterans, and there is a $5 charge for a spouse or family member who attends.Ondrus said the meal for the veterans is being paid for by the events committee, and any donations from community members are greatly appreciated. To help offset some of the costs, Ondrus said the Rev. Kenneth Medve and the bingo crew at St. Katharine Drexel Church in Lansford have donated the use of the church's bingo hall and their services during a special bingo fundraiser on April 19. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and bingo begins at 1 p.m. Money raised will go directly toward the cost of the dinner event.Seating is limited at the dinner so preregistration is required. To register, call Ondrus at 570-645-7766. You will be asked your name, branch of service, rank in the military and dates of service."Please support this worthy cause to honor our veterans," Ondrus said. "Also, please remember to thank a veteran."The Lansford Events Committee is a newly formed group who aims to help beautify and improve the town of Lansford. Committee members include Ondrus and Irma Leibensperger.Donations to help cover the cost of the event can be sent to LA Events Committee, PO Box 172, Lansford, PA 18232.
