Construction of the addition to the Panther Valley High School is expected to be completed two weeks ahead of schedule.
Kenneth Marx Jr., business manager for the school district, told the school board on Thursday that the construction deadline is June 5.He said some components of the project already are finished, including the communication and fire alarm systems. The board had a walk-through of the project in December.Another walk-through is anticipated in late April. The new building will be ready for occupancy at the start of the next school year in August. The project cost $4 million and involved filling in the high school swimming pool.Superintendent Dennis R. Kergick said the building project will eliminate most of the 12 trailer classrooms at Nesquehoning Elementary School, which were necessary because of overcrowding.Kergick said two of the portable classrooms will remain. There will be 14 classrooms on two floors that will house grades seven and eight. With the project comes the realignment of classroom structure in the district for the 2015-16 school year:• Panther Valley Elementary will house kindergarten through third grade. Currently it holds kindergarten though fifth grade.• Panther Valley Intermediate School will house grades four through six. The current middle school houses grades six through eight.• Panther Valley Junior/Senior High School will be used for grades seven through 12. Currently students in grades nine through 12 attend the high school. In other business the board conducted Thursday:• Kergick said Janene Holter, of the state Attorney General's Office, will be visiting the Middle School and High School on May 13. Although the dinner is held annually to raise money for club projects, this year all the proceeds were donated to the family of Autumn Lynn Young, an honor student at the high school who was killed March 1 in a crash in Tamaqua.
