During the March meeting, the Slatington Borough Council discussed a notice they received from the Slatington Public Library. The library reported to council that it approved a three-year term for Wanda Owens to serve on the library board of directors.
Owens is currently serving on the board as president. The new term will last until 2018. This is Owens' third term as president. She had also served as vice president for some time. The position is voluntary and pays no salary. The Slatington Public Library board of directors consists of nine members, three from each of the Northern Lehigh School District municipalities, which includes Slatington Borough, Walnutport Borough and Washington Township. These members are generally elected by the board during its January meeting. The process was delayed this year due to the weather."The Slatington Public Library has been an important part of my life since childhood. The love of books and reading were instrumental in my success in college and life. I was very happy to accept a board position to help further the library mission of literacy in the Northern Lehigh Community," Owens said."It is expected that we support the library financially and participate in fundraising. The president presides at meetings, writes grants and promotes the library to the public. All libraries face severe funding problems," Owens said. The board of directors meets 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at the library, 650 Main St., Slatington.
