The first beam for the new Route 903 bridge arrived in Jim Thorpe Monday without a hitch.
Just before 1 p.m. a truck maneuvered backward into Carbon County's parking lot after coming north on Route 209.Traffic was backed up for only a few minutes. The project requires a total of 59 beams to be delivered via truck to the site. The beams will be delivered to the west side of the river for several weeks, then around April 13, delivery will begin on the east side.A 500-ton crane will be used to lift the larger beams into place. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says that motorists should expect some weekday traffic delays in the area. The $28 million project includes construction of a new 961-foot, four-span continuous steel plate girder bridge over the Lehigh River, Lehigh Canal, Reading Blue Mountain Northern Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railroad.High Steel Erectors, a subcontractor for Allen A. Myers Construction Company, is delivering and erecting the beams. The bridge is scheduled to be completed in July 2017.
