Rush Twp. officials answer questions

Questions from residents were asked and answered during a Rush Township meeting Thursday.

During public comment, the supervisors responded to questions about township employee hours, sharing of the salt supply, moving permits, sinking culverts and sloppy care of recycling containers by Kreitzer Sanitation employees. In response, the supervisors said residents have made numerous complaints involving the township's recycling program, mainly that after the containers are dumped into the truck, they are not returned curbside. Instead, the containers are often left in the roadway, creating a driving hazard. The supervisors said complaints have been discussed with a Kreitzer Sanitation supervisor, who promised to resolve the issue.Resident Charles Shamonsky asked why a sewer department employee also drives a plow truck for the township. The supervisors said the employee's time card reflects separate accounting of the hours he works for the sewer department and for the township.Resident Bill Boyer asked why a Ryan Township truck had taken a load of salt from the Rush Township salt shed. Supervisor Chairman Shawn Gilbert said the township has an agreement with Ryan, which has a smaller area to store salt, to take a load if needed. Ryan has already delivered a replacement load, Gilbert said.Resident Joe Shamonsky asked if the township's ordinance regarding moving permits includes a penalty to those who don't get the permit. Township zoning officer Bill McMullin said the ordinance does provide for a penalty. Gilbert said the moving permit assists the township in proper addressing of municipal bills, such as water and sewer.Resident Cathey Schimpf asked McMullin, who is also the township engineer, to take a look at culverts on Holly Road. The culverts, which were installed last year, have settled, causing areas of the road to sink. McMullin said he would check the area, and possibly cover the sunken areas with modified stone. The supervisors hired Kelly Giordano of Nesquehoning as part-time administrative billing assistant at $12.50 per hour.
