Lehigh County man admits to fleeing police

A Lehigh County man pleaded guilty in Carbon County court on Monday to fleeing and eluding police and recklessly endangering another person, and was immediately sentenced to a prison term.

Jovandy Rivera Jr., 23, of Allentown, entered the pleas before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.Rivera was arrested on June 20, 2014, along Pohopoco Drive by Franklin Township police.Police made a traffic stop because the vehicle Rivera was driving had an expired inspection sticker on it. At the stop, while arresting officer Frank W. Buonaiuto was checking Rivera's driving record, the defendant fled the scene. He drove a short distance before driving his vehicle into a field. He then exited the car and fled on foot into nearby woods. There were three passengers in the vehicle at the time. Rivera was not immediately caught but his identity was obtained from the vehicle registration and the people in the vehicle. Rivera was also driving with a suspended license.Rivera is currently serving a prison term in Lehigh County for a probation/ parole violation which runs to July 15. He had been in jail since Sept. 13, 2014.On the fleeing charge Nanovic sentenced him to serve four to 18 months in prison and ordered he pay a fine of $1,000, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole. On the REAP charge Nanovic imposed a probation term of one year, consecutive to the fleeing count. The jail term runs concurrent with the Lehigh County sentence.
