Andreas man awaits hearing in fatal crash

An Andreas man is in a Centre County jail awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges stemming from a fatal motorcycle crash.

According to the Centre Daily Times, Charles Oliver II, 52, is accused of felony vehicular homicide while driving under the influence in relation to the death of Karen Moore, 50, of Port Matilda. The incident occurred the afternoon of July 2 on state Route 504 in Union Township.Police said Oliver and Moore were riding a motorcycle and traveling eastbound on the road when Oliver was unable to navigate a curve in the road. They ran off the road onto the gravel berm, and both were ejected from the bike and struck a metal guardrail, police said. Neither was wearing a helmet, police said.Moore was declared dead at the scene.Oliver was seriously injured and flown to a trauma center in Altoona. Alcohol was thought to have been a factor in the crash, and two empty liquor bottles were found in Moore's backpack, police said. A blood sample taken by hospital personnel found Oliver's blood-alcohol level to be 0.15, according to court documents.Oliver had a driver's license but was not licensed to drive a motorcycle and is charged with causing a crash involving death while not properly licensed and summary traffic offenses, including reckless driving.Oliver was arraigned Wednesday before District Judge Kelley Gillette-Walker and is held on $50,000 cash bail.A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 18.Oliver is currently lodged in the Centre County Correctional Facility.
