A fixture in the Lehighton area for about a quarter century, the RadioShack in Lehighton appears as though it's next in line to close up shop.

Located at 1211 Blakeslee Boulevard Drive East, in front of the Carbon Plaza, a sign on the store's front door states there is a clearance sale.Contacted Monday morning, an employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said "We are a clearance store. Anything else from this point is rumor."When fully staffed, the RadioShack in Lehighton employs about five people, the employee said.Of those, some have chosen to stay, while others are in the process of being transferred, the employee said.The store has been a presence in the Lehighton area for years.The news comes less than a week after the Tamaqua RadioShack, located at the southwest corner of the HT Commons Shopping Center in Hometown, closed its doors suddenly.The store employed two full-time and two part-time workers.It is unclear what will happen to those employees.Opened in 1978, the Tamaqua RadioShack was originally located at the east end of the Jamesway Shopping Center, Route 209.The corporation currently operates other local outlets in Brodheadsville, Frackville, Stroudsburg, Pottsville and Hazleton.The future is uncertain, based on various news reports.Bloomberg News reported Monday that RadioShack is preparing to shut down the almost-century-old retail chain in a bankruptcy deal that would sell about half its store leases to Sprint and close the rest.RadioShack, a retail chain that offers a variety of electronics, cellphones, hobby equipment, and batteries, has been struggling.In March of last year, the company announced it would close about 1,100 of its 4,000 stores.RadioShack hasn't announced another round of store closings, but local media outlets from California to West Virginia are reporting that some store managers have said that they have been told their stores will be closing over the next 30 to 90 days. Some Texas store employees are saying the same thing.
