Man gets year in jail for DUI

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a year in jail on Friday after pleading guilty in a driving under the influence case.

He was one of eight defendants in pending cases, and who were scheduled to go on trial on Monday but instead entered pleas.Penn Forest arrestJohn C. Koons Sr., 59, of Albrightsville, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve one to five years in the county prison on the DUI charge and 90 days in prison on a charge of driving under suspension-DUI related. The terms run concurrently.Koons was arrested on April 1, 2014, along Drakes Creek Road in Penn Forest Township by state police at Fern Ridge. Given a test, the result revealed a 0.19 BAC and also indicated the presence of a controlled substance.Since the arrest Koons said he had gone "cold turkey" not consuming any alcohol.In addition to the jail term Serfass imposed a fine of $2,500 on the DUI county and $1,000 on the suspension charge. Koons was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment and render 100 hours of community service when released on parole.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on Feb. 6.
