Students get an inside look at health care

A hospital setting is always a flurry of activity.

From patient registration to discharge procedures, something is always going on to keep employees busy serving residents. On Wednesday, 16 Weatherly Area High School students were immersed in the operations of Blue Mountain Health System's Gnaden Huetten campus, learning about a variety of clinical and clerical careers that make the hospital run like a well-oiled machine. The event was the fourth annual Career Day, organized in collaboration between the hospital, the high school's Health Careers Club and Eastcentral Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center.Denise Kennedy, administrative support of public relations and fund development at the hospital, said that the day allowed students to witness what careers are available in a hospital setting."It opens the door on an entry level," she said, noting that since Blue Mountain Health System is a small, not-for-profit hospital, it provides students with more hands-on experiences during the event.Students learned about careers in the laboratory, imaging, respiratory, pharmacy, emergency room, cardiology, rehabilitation, case management, registration, human resources, information technology, medical records and nutritional services.Kennedy said she learned that a number of the students have participated in the career day for multiple years, and some even come back to shadow employees over the summer months.Rebekah McFadden, Weatherly Area School District nurse who operates the Health Careers Club at the high school, said that the day helps students interested in health care learn more before they graduate."It's a way to let students learn more about health care and the careers included in that field," she said, noting that the event, as well as other upcoming programs in the club are made possible through a $400 grant the school received through Partners in Education out of Luzerne County. "The hospital has always been very welcoming to our students."Debra Youngfelt of Eastcentral PA AHEC, said that the mission of the program is to "increase access to health care and build the future workforce.""It encourages them to find out more about different careers that are available," she said. "It exposes them to see if health care is the field they want to pursue. That way when they enter college they have a better idea of what they want to do."The students were in agreement that the day was a blast and they learned a lot.Kayla Craver, a senior at Weatherly, said the program is helping her decide what she wants to do as a career. She particularly enjoyed seeing the operations of the emergency room. Her friend Cyan Botch agreed that the ER was particularly interesting, but added that she also liked seeing how cardiology worked.Freshman Jillian Bartel said that she thought the day was "very beneficial."In addition to the career day, the school will host two guest speakers who will talk to the students about various health-related careers.
