Bulldogs fall in OT

After a dismal performance at the free throw line in a recent outing, Pen Argyl head coach Kyle Hutnik made it a point of emphasis for his team at practice.

Unfortunately for host Northern Lehigh Friday night, the extra drills payed off for the Green Knights.Hutnik's squad shot 15-of-18 from the stripe after the third quarter to help Pen Argyl gain a 60-52 double overtime win over the Bulldogs."We made our free throws down the end and that always helps," said Hutnik. "This week we really concentrated on free-throw shooting. In our last game, even though we won, we shot 13-for-34 from the line. It was just awful. So this last week we really put some pressure on them."We got to the line tonight and guys stepped up. We've been preaching to them that fouls shots at the end of the game make the difference. Brandon Leidy hit some clutch ones and so did some of our other players. Even though they ran a great play at the end of (the first overtime), we knocked down our free throws when it counted."Leidy hit a pair of foul shots with 26.8 seconds left in regulation to help the Knights rally from a five-point deficit and tie the score at 47-47. The Bulldogs had a chace to win at the end of the fourth, but Joe Egan's jumper was just off the mark.Leidy and Chris Muller both hit a pair at the line to give the visitors the advantage in the first overtime but a dramatic three-pointer by Tyshawn Golden at the buzzer allowed the Bulldogs (1-8; 0-5) to force another extra frame."We actually wanted to foul on that play, but we had a little bit of miscommunication on our part," said Hutnik. "He's a pretty good player. He's quick. We wanted to contain him and make his looks tough from the field. We knew they were going to him there.""We had to try and get the ball into the hands of Tyshawn or Jarryd (Traca) because that was our offense," said Nolehi mentor Jeff Miller. "That's what we were trying to do because right now that's our best option. After Tyshawn hit that shot, we won the tap in the second overtime. But we missed a shot, got an offensive rebound and missed another shot. They went down and scored."Pen Argyl scored all eight of the points in the second OT as the Bulldogs went 0-for-6 from the floor during that four-minute span."We don't get a lot of inside scoring presence so it puts a lot of pressure on our guards," said Miller. "We scrap but we don't finish well around the basket. They give a maximum effort every game, and they just have to continue to do that."This was a game we thought we'd be in and could win. But we need other people to step up and score for us. Jarryd hit shots for us and that was a lift for us but we also need an inside presence."Golden finished with 20 points to lead all scorers while Traca, who entered the contest with just six points all season, drained four treys and ended with 15.PEN ARGYLMuller 3-3-4-10, Strouse 7-4-6-19, Gillette 3-4-4-11, Leidy 3-5-6-11, Brunstetter 4-0-2-8, D.
