Schnogadahl Sammi

Schnogadahl Sammi is always present at the Pleasant Valley display and is a big hit, especially with the kids. Sammi may be stuffed, but she was the lodge's first live groundhog who began predicting the weather in 1995, Nummer Sexa's answer to Punxsutawney Phil.

The tradition began behind Cherry's Sunset Family Restaurant in Kresgeville at sunrise and has become an annual event, bringing anywhere between 75 to 100 people who anxiously await to hear if there will be six more weeks of winter or an early spring. This year they will meet at 7 a.m. Monday.Sammi I predicted the weather in 1995 and 1996. She died that year and was stuffed. Sammi's handler was Fred Snyder, a Grundsow Lodge member. He acquired Sammi II when just a baby. Sammi II predicted the weather for three years until the Pennsylvania Game Commission notified Snyder that since he had no permit she had to be released into the wild, which she was. Sammi III lived 10 years and died three days before Groundhog Day in 2010. Since then, lodge member Harold Kreger (Wedder Barichda) has been channeling Sammi I's spirit for Groundhog Day predictions."It's all in fun," says Andrews.Lee Haas, Lodge Haaptmann since 2007, says that the lodges are all about preserving the Pennsylvania German language and traditions and having fun.If interested in attending Grundsow Lodge Nummer Sexa's banquet, please note, it is for men only and you need to speak or understand Pennsylvania German. If you are interested in learning more about the Grundsow Lodge Nummer Sexa, contact Robert Andrews at 610-681-4096.
