Great Dane honored for saving owners

Heidi, an 8-year-old Great Dane, is credited with saving the lives of her owners, William and Bonnie.

She is their heroine.Early Dec. 3, Heidi tried to wake William Moffett by pushing his face. Moffett, asleep in the living room, finally woke up around 5:30 a.m. Thinking Heidi needed a bathroom break, he got up. But Heidi didn't need a bathroom break. She was trying to alert her master that the house was on fire. When William saw the back of the house engulfed in flames, he yelled for his wife, who was sleeping in their upstairs bedroom. It was only through William's voice guiding her that she found her way to him and Heidi at the front door, where they made their escape with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. The house and everything inside was destroyed, including two vehicles and a truck. Their insurance company has placed them in a temporary home until they are prepared to rebuild. Their beloved Heidi had to stay with the Moffetts' son and family until Monday night. She's now back with William and Bonnie. For Heidi's heroic act, she received special recognition at the Polk Township's supervisors' meeting Monday night from the Polk supervisors, Polk Township Fire Company, Chestnuthill Township supervisors, West End Fire Company, Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company, Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder Fire Company, Jackson Township Fire Company and Tunkhannock Fire Company.Billy Tippett, Polk Township Fire Company's fire chief, presented a Hero Award plaque to Heidi, along with a huge bone and a basket filled with treats. Representatives from each of the fire companies that responded to the fire assisted in that presentation. The Moffetts raised Heidi from a puppy. She loves car rides. William takes her every day for a ride and buys her a hamburger or grilled cheese sandwich, her favorites. She now suffers with a degenerative disease of her hips and has some difficulty walking and lying down."She is the sweetest, gentlest dog. She is filled with unconditional love. There's not a mean bone in her body. We may have lost every material thing, but we are alive and we're together," says Bonnie with tears in her eyes.
